Subject: [Lama-agents] Lower Mississippi River (LMR) Dredging Update 41618
The Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley New Orleans (MVN) continues to respond to the shoaling in Southwest Pass as related to the
extended high river stages of early 2018. Please see the enclosed diagrams on the second page for experimental river level forecasts by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS). The available forecasts
seem to agree that high river stages between 14 and 15 feet will continue over the next few weeks.
DRAFT RESTRICTIONS IN THE AREA OF SOUTHWEST PASS (SWP):
The Bar Pilots further reduced their maximum draft recommendation to 42 feet (freshwater) at 1000 hours on Saturday, April
7, 2018. The Bar Pilots previous draft recommendation of 44 feet (freshwater) was established at 1030 hours on March 19, 2018.
The Crescent River Port Pilots reduced their maximum recommended draft in the Cubit's Gap area to 42 feet on Saturday, April
The Federal Pilots reduced their maximum draft recommendation to 42 feet (matching controlling draft) on Saturday, April
The controlling draft is the same for all three Pilot Associations navigating vessels in the area of SWP.
INDUSTRY HOPPER DREDGES IN SOUTHWEST PASS (SWP):
industry hopper dredge (Manson Construction) commenced dredging in SWP on March 11, 2018 under Southwest Pass Hopper Dredge Rental Contract No. 2-2018. The NEWPORT is presently dredging from Mile 3 Below Head of Passes (BHP) to Mile 4 BHP. <span-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:black">
industry hopper dredge (Manson Construction) commenced dredging under Southwest Pass Hopper Dredge Rental Contract No. 3-2018 on Monday, March 12, 2018. The BAYPORT is presently dredging in the area of the Head of Passes.
The industry hopper dredge STUYVESANT (Dutra Group) began dredging
in SWP on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. The STUVESANT is dredging on the jetty end of SWP from Mile 17.5 BHP to Mile 19 BHP.
GOVERNMENT HOPPER DREDGES IN SOUTHWEST PASS (SWP):<span-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:black">
hopper dredge WHEELER is dredging below the Venice Jump from approximately Mile 10.5 Above Head of Passes (AHP) to Mile 10 AHP.
The WHEELER began dredging on March 31, 2018 and is s approved for 60 days of dredging under the Red Flag or Emergency Call Out Procedure in response to no bids being received from the dredging industry to Southwest Pass Hopper Dredge Contract No. 4-2018.
CUTTERHEAD DREDGES IN SOUTHWEST PASS (SWP):
ROBERT M. WHITE: The
industry cutterhead dredge (Manson Construction) began dredging in SWP under Southwest Pass Cutterhead Dredge Rental Contract No. 1-2018 on March 16, 2018.
The cutterhead continues dredging on the western side of the channel at Cubits Gap (Mile 3.5 AHP to Mile 1.5 BHP). The cutterhead is now at approximately Mile 2.68 AHP and all dredged material removed will be beneficially used and strategically placed
to create new land alongside the western boundary of SWP.
The MVN solicited
Southwest Pass Cutterhead Dredge Rental Contract No. 2-2018 and awarded the contract to Weeks Marine. Weeks intends to respond to this contract with their cutterhead dredge the G.D. MORGAN. The cutterhead is now expected to commence
dredging in SWP by tomorrow (April 17, 2018) on the first assignment is from Mile 5 BHP to Mile 6.3 BHP.
The Carrollton Gauge reading at 1300 hours today was 14.50 feet, with
a 24-hour change of - 0.14 feet.
